Historically, cinnamon has been used for loss of appetite, diarrhea, and other gastrointestinal complaints such as indigestion and dyspepsia. The spice has recently gained much attention for its potential treatment for blood sugar swings and type 2 diabetes. There are 2 major types of cinnamon both of which are from the bark of related trees. Cinnamomum verum or Cinnamomum zeylanicum is one. Cinnamomum cassia or Cinnamomum aromaticum is the type most commonly used as a spice. Cinnamon cassia has been more qualititatively studied, and is thought to have more blood sugar balancing and insulin-stimulating properties.
